Over the years, Mike has spoken to countless civic organizations, schools, business and youth groups, even churches and prisons. His most recent talk includes a PowerPoint presentation of never before seen pictures of World War II featured in his new book.
Mike Looney’s first novel, Heroes Are Hard to Find is also widely acclaimed by the media and public alike. Heroes delves heavily into the theme of good over evil and exploits the pitfalls of cheating in life and sports. In conjuncture with Heroes, Mike appeared on over 70 radio stations nationwide discussing the impact on society of cheating in sports and vice versa.
True to his roots, much of Heroes Are Hard to Find takes place in East Dallas and at Woodrow Wilson. Blake Miles, Mike’s classmate at Woodrow Wilson, contributed original drawings of Woodrow Wilson and Harrell’s Drug Store for inside the book. Charlie Waters, former All-Pro with the Dallas Cowboys, drew the cover.
Mike was born in Monticello, Arkansas but his parents relocated to Dallas in 1963 and he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1967. Mike graduated from Texas Tech in 1971 where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and earned a degree in marketing.
Mike has enjoyed a successful business career as an insurance broker for over 30 years, specializing in employee benefit plans and executive compensation. He currently lives in the Lakewood area of Dallas with his wife, Sandra, a former model and current local actress. The Looney’s have three daughters, Sloan, Kate and CeCe who all graduated from Woodrow Wilson in 2001, 2003 and 2007 respectively. Sloan graduated Magna Cum Laude from Vanderbilt the spring of 2005, while Kate graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in the spring of 2007. CeCe is currently majoring in theater at Kansas University in Lawrence.
