Review by Katherine Williams:
The Long Road Home by Carolyn M. Bowen is a thriller/mystery novel. Kate McClellan is a woman who seems to have a pretty good life: she has a great job at an ad agency and a wonderful fiance named Ken. Out of nowhere, though, Kate’s parents are killed in an automobile accident which leaves Kate feeling lost. Despite this pain, she manages to move on with her life and is ready to be married.
Time moves forward and the day before her wedding she discovers Ken has been on x-rated sites and has practically cheated in their relationship. She is fed up with his behavior and feels the need to leave him. She escapes to her grandmother’s plantation in Florida, a place she knows where Ken could never find her. But little does she know that as well as a powerful businessman, Ken is a man who has ties with terrorists across the country. These people are trying to kill her to take over her family business. Will Kate be able to hide? Or will she end up alone, left for dead by her evil fiance?
The action-packed plot of this novel delivers a powerful, long-lasting punch. A thriller indeed, The Long Road Home manages to consistently keep you on the edge of your seat. The story starts right away, leaving no time to waste in learning about Kate’s hectic life. As the plot moves forward, I loved that I had the chance as a reader to connect the dots between all of the people and what they had done in their past.
It really makes you think about the people you let into your life and what their intentions are- Ken is such a sleaze-ball and I felt so bad that Kate had a man like him in her life. I was really rooting for Kate the whole way through and while I won’t spoil the ending, I will say that her ending is a bit of a twist. But it is an enjoyable twist and I’m glad that she got the ending that I feel she deserved.
I liked reading this book because after I finished I felt like I had been on a wild ride. Bowen’s writing is great. The way she manages to create such an interesting story helps show off her enticing style. The pacing of the story is fast-paced, which was mostly done well, however, I felt like it started off moving a little too quickly for my taste. But I am not much of a mystery/thriller reader and I think a lot of people will appreciate the way the story sucks you right in from the beginning.
The component of this story that got me most excited was the characters presented, their relationships and the suspense that came with discovering more secrets about them. I believe people who enjoy reading or watching action or adventure novels/movies will be over the moon for this book.
