Daily Review: Solomon’s Compass by Carol Kilgore
November 19, 2018
Adventure, intrigue, and mystery, coupled with a forbidden romance.
When Coast Guard Commander Taylor Campbell returns to Rock Harbor, Texas, to tend to her uncle’s estate, she meets a mysterious former Navy SEAL, Jake Solomon, and learns her uncle didn’t drown accidentally.
His murder was one in a string of murders of a group of Vietnam veterans who called themselves the Compass Points.
Before her uncle died, he sent Taylor a message with the location of his buried treasure. Unearthing it will place her squarely in the killer’s crosshairs, but she’s determined to fulfill her uncle’s last wish.
Jake, sent to protect her and find the killer, has other plans. His mission would be much easier to accomplish if he could forget how good she’d tasted when he kissed her.

This book grabbed me as soon as I was introduced to Taylor Campbell, a pint-sized commander with the U.S. Coast Guard who knows how to give orders, get a mission done, and stay cool under fire.
When ex-SEAL investigator Jake Solomon enters the scene, secretly assigned to keep her alive while hiding his true identity from her, the plot deepens with romance and mystery.
The interplay and pacing of the suspense with a growing love story (complete with good sexy scenes) is just right, and the setting in a town on the coast of Texas is so real you can feel the killer humidity and smell the beer in local hangouts.
At the exciting climax (no spoiler alert ’cause I’m not giving anything away), Taylor’s series of changing emotions ring true, and for me, this was especially satisfying.

Kilgore has outdone herself. I mean, what’s not to like? Adventure, intrigue, and mystery, coupled with a forbidden romance.
Well, ya see, hunky ex-SEAL Jake is supposed to be posing as his Vietnam veteran father, and his mission is supposed to be to protect the lovely lady Taylor, the niece of his father’s former Coastie pal, and find out who killed her uncle, not fall in love… and into bed… with her.
And the lady?
She’s a Coast Guard commander who is jolly well used to being in charge, and taking care of herself, thank you very much.
But sometimes, even a commander needs help. Especially when the threats to her life are escalating..Now Taylor and Jake are both in the killer’s crosshairs.
Who’s picking off this group of Vietnam veterans, and why? Can Jake and Taylor survive?
Guess you’ll have to read the book to find out. Go ahead! Read the book. You won’t be sorry.
