Win Prestigious Badges and Book Reviews: First Chapter Contest

I AM PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE the first annual First Chapter Writing Competition open to authors worldwide. The Contest is sponsored by the East Texas Writer’s Guild, and the idea is to give authors a valuable way and valuable new tools to promote and showcase their books.

Please click here for complete details: Enter by June 5th!

You don’t have to register for or attend the workshop to enter.

The contest doesn’t require a lot of work.

All you have to do is submit a Word document of the first chapter of either a published or unpublished book. We are looking for an entry between 1,000 and 1,500 words of the first chapter.

And the contest is not expensive.

The entry fee is only $10.

Deadline for entries is June 5, 2015.

Winners will be announced the middle of June.

The ETWG Writing Competition is open to all genres, but there will not be a contest for each individual genre.

The Contest has two distinct categories.

Category I is for novels published between January 1, 2014, and June 5, 2015.

Category II is for novels that have not yet been published or accepted for publication.

You can only submit one entry per category, but you can enter both categories.

The fee is $10 per entry.

There will be a total of eighteen (18) attractive, prestigious badges awarded in each category.

First Place Award

Second Place Award

Third Place Award

A total of five (5) Finalist Awards.

A total of ten (10) Semi-Finalist Awards.

You can place the digital badges on your book covers and promote them as national award winners.

Or, you can print the digital badges and place them on your paperback or hardcover books, giving them a promotional boost.

If you win an award for an unpublished book, you will have the digital badge already on hand to help in your marketing launch when the book is published and released.

Book Reviews

The East Texas Writer’s Guild will provide book reviews on Amazon for the top three winners in each category.

The top three winners, the five finalists, and the ten semi-finalists will all have their books showcased individually on Caleb and Linda Pirtle, our Website that’s read by 20,000 to 30,000 visitors each month. On the site, each book will be linked directly to Amazon.

The Writing Competition will utilize the blind judging method to select winners.

Writers will not know the names of the judges.

Judges will not have access to the names of writers submitting their first chapters.

My wife and I are in charge of the judging.

We’re both authors.

We know how important blind judging is to authors.

We’ll make sure it’s fair.

Neither of us will enter.

So go ahead.

Give your book a chance to be a winner.

  • Jane Gorman

What a great competition! Do you know when the final decisions will be announced?

    • Caleb Pirtle

Thanks for asking Jane. It was my mistake for omitting the decision date. Winners will be announced in late June.

  • Thanks Caleb, looks great, keeps our hopes up!

    • Caleb Pirtle

Claude: We’re all working together to beat this publishing game.

  • Wow. What a great opportunity!

    • Caleb Pirtle

      Go for it, Sue.

  • JeanLauzier

Sigh…the one I’d really like to enter has been accepted for publication. Guess I’ll have to go with my second choice.

    • Caleb Pirtle

Good writing is good writing, Jean, regardless of the choice.

  • Marilyn Meredith

I want to enter in the first category, is theire a special way you want that first chapter formatted for the published work?

  • Helen Osterman

Can I send a second edition which I self published?

  • When you send money via PayPal, what’s the email addy? The same as the one you attach your Word file to? Also, I have a header that’s not going to be on the cover sheet, but will start at page 2 on the first page of the chapter because that’s just what Word wants to do unless you jump through hoops with section breaks and so forth. Hope that is not a problem.

    • Caleb Pirtle

Shalanna: Please email me at, and I’ll help walk you through the entry submission process. I am delighted that you are entering a First Chapter.

  • Kid Domino

I want to enter both contests, but I don’t know how to send money via Paypal to an email address. Can you provide instructions? Thanks!
