Murder in Cottage #6 by Dianne Harman

ADVICE MOST AUTHORS have heard from time to time is “write about the things you know and like.” Dianne Harman, a cozy mystery author, knows what lovers of the genre want to read. Her Liz Lucas cozy mystery series illustrates her love for cooking, food, mystery, and dogs.
In Book One of the series, Murder in Cottage #6, Liz Lucas fell in love with the lodge after she and her friend Judy Rasmussen enjoyed a brief visit. She persuaded her husband Joe to buy the lodge and spa in the small town of Red Cedar about an hour’s drive north of San Francisco. After the death of her beloved spouse, Liz decided to stay on and manage the lodge herself. She had a handful of employees who helped her maintain the property and provide a peaceful, pampered respite to those who needed an escape from the hustle and bustle of big city life. The lodge had ten cottages, and all of them had a panoramic view of the Pacific coast.
The book begins with Liz snuggled in a comfy chair beside a large window in the lodge’s great room. She sips a cup of morning coffee and listens to the delightfully soothing sounds of the seagulls. She gazes out the large window and watches their daily ballet performance in the sky. Liz admires their graceful maneuvers. The breathtaking view from her window never disappoints her.
Dianne Harman adroitly breaks the quietness of the scene with the sound of the ocean’s waves crashing against the cliffs. At this point, the reader knows that the homeostasis of the lodge and its owner will soon be as chaotic as the churning water rushing to the shore.
Liz will soon be thrust into a whirlwind like nothing she has ever experienced: the murder of one of her clients. True to the cozy mystery genre, it’s up to Liz and her friend Judy to find the murderer and thereby save the reputation of the lodge. The action in the novel is fast and keeps the reader intrigued with a fascinating assortment of characters who could have a motive for killing the client in Cottage Number 6.
Dianne Harman is a master storyteller and claims that many of her stories and characters are derived “from a diverse business and personal background” ranging from her national antique and art appraisal business to teaching yoga class.
